Some speed reduction is normal when using a VPN, as your traffic is encrypted and routed through a server. However, with WireGuard and a nearby server, the impact should be minimal.
Tips to Improve VPN Speed
- Connect to a server closer to your physical location. The further the server, the higher the latency. Choose a server in your country or a neighbouring country.
- Use WireGuard protocol. WireGuard is significantly faster than OpenVPN. Go to Settings > Protocol and select WireGuard.
- Try a different server in the same country. Some servers may be under higher load. Try an alternative.
- Check your base internet speed. Disconnect from the VPN and run a speed test at fast.com. The VPN cannot be faster than your underlying connection.
- Close bandwidth-heavy apps. Streaming, downloads, or video calls running in the background can reduce available bandwidth.
- Avoid servers marked as high load. The app indicates server load — choose a server with lower load.
