What Is a Warrant Canary?

A warrant canary is a regularly updated public statement confirming that we have not received certain types of secret government orders — such as National Security Letters (NSLs) or court orders with gag provisions that would prevent us from disclosing their existence.

As long as the canary statement is present and up to date, you can be confident that no such orders have been received. If the canary statement is removed or stops being updated, this may indicate that such an order has been received and we are legally prohibited from confirming it directly.
